Burton L. Smith, Sr., 69, of Morgan Township, Valparaiso, passed away Thursday, July 22 2010 at the VNA Horton Hospice Center.  He was born August 7, 1940 in Valparaiso to Bert Farnum and Nita Smith.  Burt graduated from Valparaiso High School and served in the U.S. Air Force.  He had been a salesman with R.W. Pool Co. for 30 years and with Tippecanoe Beverage for eight years.  He was an active member of Full Gospel Tabernacle in Wheatfield, was a founding member of the Morgan Twp. Fire Department and a member of the American Legion Charles Pratt Post #94 in Valparaiso.  Recently he began volunteering at area nursing homes by singing to residents.  On August 16, 1962 in Marquette, MI he married Joann M. Howard, who survives, along with one daughter, Carrie Breyfogle of Wanatah; four grandchildren, Candi (Jay) Lord of Wanatah, Crystal Smith of Kouts, Dan and Nikki Breyfogle both of Wanatah; two great grandchildren, Nolan Lord and Allanah Bucher; two sisters, Linda Crawford of Hobart and Virginia Saarela of Billings, MT.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Burton L. Smith, Jr. in 1999; and an infant brother Jimmie Lee Davis. 
A funeral service will be held on Monday at 1:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home, the Rev. Roger Scully officiating with burial to follow at Adams Cemetery in Morgan Township.  Visitation will be Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
