Irene Pauline Graham, age 88, of Valparaiso, IN passed away on August 10, 2019 at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso. Irene, born October 31, 1930 in Rhea, Texas, was the fourth of seven children of Robert and Anna (Gallmeier) Schueler. She had fond memories of her childhood on the family farm, and how the family pulled together to survive the Great Depression and Dust Bowl era. After graduating from Friona (TX) High School (1948), she followed her passion for Christ and teaching in acquiring degrees from St. John’s Lutheran College (1950) in Winfield, KS and Concordia Teachers College (1955) in River Forest, IL. A beloved teacher, she taught elementary grade school in Chester, IL, Albuquerque, NM, St. Joseph, MI and Sawyer, MI. While teaching in St. Joe, she met and married Eugene W. Graham Jr. of St. Joseph, MI on June 24, 1956, who preceded her in death in 2008. Irene and Gene started their family in Michigan, moving to Valparaiso in 1967, where they took great pride in raising their four children, helping in the community, and following their strong Lutheran faith. In retirement they enjoyed traveling the country, moving to Pierceton, IN and Ocala, FL, before returning to Valparaiso for their final years. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sister Elenor (Meissner), her brothers Raymond, Norbert, Floyd, and Robert, and daughter Susan. Irene is survived by her daughters, Karla (Kevin) Casey of Evanston, IL, Mona (Robert) Jankowski of New Bern, NC, and son, Eugene III (Julie) of Hanna, IN, grandchildren Jonathan Kerr, Jyll (John) McNeil, Sabrina (Jason) Garvin, Siobhan (Michael) Hinker, Colleen (Steven) Tratar, Caitlin (Sean) Breen, and 10 great-grandchildren (Hannah, Grace, and Natalie Hinker, Quinn and Graham Tratar, Genevieve and Jasper Garvin, Harrison, Clayton, and Alec McNeil). She is also survived by her brother Arnold of Dallas, TX, and a large and lovely extended family that she enjoyed visiting at reunions. She will be joining her Husband and Daughter in eternal peace at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso.
Irene requested in lieu of a memorial service, that all share their fond memories of her with their families and spend time with their loved ones who are still here.
Irene valued the beauty of the outdoors and the importance of play and recreational parks in childhood development.  In her memory, donations may be made in Irene’s name to the Hanna Lions Club (P.O. Box 236, Hanna, IN, 46340) in support of their Park Beautification Fund.
