Gerald “Fritz” Spiess, 83, of LaCrosse passed away Sunday, September 13, 2020 at Journey Senior Living in Merrillville, Indiana.  He was born April 5, 1937 in Starke County to Walter & Lila Mae (Collins) Spiess, graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1955 and served proudly with the U.S. Navy from 1955 - 57.  Fritz made his career with Bethlehem Steel for over 30 years retiring as Foreman of the #1 Roll Shop.  He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in LaCrosse having served as president along with other offices.  He was a passionate Little League coach for many years, served as Dewey Township Trustee and was an avid LaCrosse Tigers basketball fan.  Gardening and cooking became integral parts of his life, especially after his girls left for college.  From the moment of his grandchildren’s arrival they constantly brought him great joy.  On October 3, 1959 at the Valparaiso University Chapel he married Patricia Stuck who survives along with their daughters, Lora Spiess of Odenton, Maryland, Lisa (Scott) Barlag of Valparaiso, Lynn (Troy) Alexander of Springfield, Illinois, brother, Norman Spiess of South Bend, and grandchildren, Kelsey Talmadge, Nicholas Talmadge, Alec Witner and Kaelyn Witner.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Carolyn Robinson & Gloria Pratt and brother, Arlen Spiess.
A private visitation and funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 19th at St. John’s Lutheran Church, LaCrosse with Rev. Joel S. Zipay officiating and burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church of LaCrosse.
