Russell Wade Harter, 90 of Valparaiso, passed away Saturday, September 16, 2017.  He was born February 20, 1927 in Nappanee to Lawrence and Surelda (Pippenger) Harter.  Russell was a WWII Veteran of the US Army, having served with a medical clearing company in Ludwigsburg, Germany.  He applied his G.I. Bill to graduate with a degree in agriculture from Purdue University.  After working both as an ag field educator and later an artificial inseminator for dairy farmers, he turned his career to insurance.  As an agent, he knew every country road in Northwest Indiana (just about).  On June 3, 1951 in Amboy, Russell married Charlotte Ann Kelsey who preceded him in death in 1988.  As his family grew to include three children, he built two houses, working on each after a full day of insurance work, digging the first’s foundation by hand.  Russ’ building skills then turned to providing affordable housing (though he’d never say it that way) in three downtown Valpo apartments (vacuum included every time).  He embodied a caregiver, retiring to take care of Charlotte during her long illness.  This included supporting her mind by taking her and wheelchair to Valparaiso University classes to earn her Master’s Degree and carrying her, when necessary, into an inaccessible classroom.  His support of higher education later found focus in his granddaughters.  His early pastimes of hunting and fishing gave way to new ones in cooking and quilt-making.  His whistle could resound throughout the neighborhood at dinnertime or provide a polka accompaniment to his flurry of mashing potatoes by hand.  Prepared and resourceful, Russ always had a “back up”, whether it be a can of beans in the pantry, or a size x woodscrew in his hardware store (garage).  At 82, he pounded his last nail, having completely restored the 20’ backyard creek bridge after a flood.  A tease to the end, he’d lovingly crush your hand in a handshake while distracting you with his hearty laugh and twinkling eyes.  This love of companionship never dimmed.  He is survived by his children, Burton (Denise) Harter of Athens, Ohio; Beth Harter of Poulsbo, Washington, and Kenneth (Noël Evans) Harter of Valparaiso; grandchildren, Ariel (Jonathan) Lomas of Greenville, South Carolina, Lydia Harter (Matt DeVillier) of Austin, Texas, and Rue Harter of Valparaiso; sister, Ruby Miller of Nappanee, Indiana; and many loving extended family and friends.  He was also preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen Harter and Jean Tyrrell; and brother-in-law, James Miller.
Visitation will be held on September 29, 2017 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso with a Funeral Service beginning at 1:00 PM.  Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to
The Alzheimer's Association or Habitat for Humanity International – Northwest Indiana.
