Robert ‘Norman’ Spurr Sr., age 94 of Westville, formerly of Union Township, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 26, 2018.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty (Dick) Spurr; children: Kathryn (Charles) Berrier of Sheridan, Oregon, Robert (Lisa) Spurr and Debra (Richard) Evers both of Valparaiso; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Norma Byers of Council Bluffs, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his son, Steven, parents, Burl and Elizabeth (Haxton) Spurr, sisters, Margaret Henderson, Jean Drake, brothers Thomas, Ray, and Alexander.
Norm is a proud veteran of WWII serving with the 11thrd Airborne, B Company.  He served as a paratrooper, primarily in the Philippines and was part of the rescue at Los Banos prison camp.  He worked at US Steel and retired with 40 years of service.  After retiring from US Steel he worked at the Porter County Expo Center as a groundskeeper/handyman for 2 years.  During his younger years, he and his wife, would load up their 4 children in the station wagon and pull a travel trailer going to Orr, Minnesota to fish for many years.   They traveled out west and into Canada as well.  He enjoyed woodworking projects, making small children toys, bird houses, wind whirly gigs and flower carts.   In later years, he stayed close to home and enjoyed gardening and watching birds.   He was an avid football fan and it didn’t matter who was playing, he loved the sport.   He loved his family very much and will be greatly missed by them and all who knew him.
A visitation will be held Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 3 – 7 pm at Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso. A committal service will begin at 11:00 am Friday directly at Mosier Cemetery, 600 W. ½ mile south of U.S. 30. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to VNA Hospice.
