Robert S. Barnes, 94 of Valparaiso, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, Saturday, September 23, 2017.  He was born January 31, 1923 in Valparaiso to the late, Harry C. and Alice M. (Selman) Barnes. Robert graduated from Wheeler High School in 1941 and served in the US Navy during WWII as an Air Crewman of a Night Torpedo Squad, aboard the USS Independence located in the Pacific Theater of operations.  After the war, he enlisted in the Indiana Army National Guard, being promoted through the ranks, to become Commander of the 113th Engineer Battalion, 38th Infantry Division, retiring as Lt. Col. in March of 1967.  Robert worked for many years for A. Metz, Inc., Gary, retiring as a general manager.  He was a member of Heritage Lutheran Church, Valparaiso and the Hobart Elks Lodge for many years.
On June 27, 1942 in Wheeler, Robert married Armeta L. Jones who preceded him in death in 2008.  He is survived by his children, Patricia (Larry) Atwell, Valparaiso, Mary (Bernard) Gawronski, Chesterton, and Thomas “Cactus” (Julie) M. Barnes, Watseka, IL; grandchildren, Susan (Doug Campbell) Atwell, Lauri (Scott) Swan,  Robert M. Barnes, Matthew (Jennifer) Spiess, and Dulcie Barnes; great grandchildren, Taelor and Bailey Swan, Alex, Heather, Ben, and Laureen Spiess, Alexis Barnes, and James P. Smith; sister, Dorothy (Ken) Porter; and half-sister, Sandra Lockhart.  He was also preceded in death by his sister, Helen McCallister; and brother, Bernard Barnes.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 26, 2017 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso with a Funeral Service beginning at 1:00 PM.  Entombment to follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.  Memorial Contributions may be made to the Banta Senior Center, Valparaiso.
