Michael “Mick” Cavanaugh, 83 of Valparaiso, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 28, 2019.  He was born July 10, 1935 in Gary to Donald and Catherine Cavanaugh, graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1953, received a B.S. in Education from Western New Mexico University and his Master’s degree from Indiana University.  Mick made his career as a teacher and coach for over 50 years in Indiana and New Mexico.  Beginning at Tolleston High School in Gary, then Wheeler, Hebron and Portage in Indiana before stints at Gadsden, Mayfield, Las Cruces and Hagerman high schools in New Mexico, he returned to Valparaiso High School in Indiana in retirement to serve as an assistant coach of girls cross country and track & field. The degree of success his athletes and teams achieved was always higher than prior to his arrival.  Mick’s ability to evaluate talent and potential was uncanny, often scouting for potential in the hallways between classes observing the cadence and gate of students.  He was able to break down minute physical movements without the aid of slo-mo to improve efficiency and technique.  A generation of teen athletes benefitted from his unique criticism and sublime motivational skill.
Survivors include his children: Rev. Michael J. (Geni) Cavanaugh, Jr., Chad D. (Sheila) Cavanaugh, Kerri E. (Steve) Berlin, Kristi A. Cavanaugh, brother, James R. (Ruth) Cavanaugh, sister, Patricia Parent and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be held May 8th at Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso from 3 – 6 pm.
