Jonas Lee Griffin
January 27, 1956 – November 14, 2020
It is with great sadness that we share that Jonas L. Griffin, passed away at home on Saturday, November 14, 2020, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born on January 27, 1956 to Jimmie Ella and Melvin C. Griffin in Chicago, IL. He attended Overton Elementary, DuSable Upper Grade Center and Chicago Vocational High School. In high school, he was in the automobile mechanics program and the Letterman’s Club as part of the basketball and baseball teams. He graduated in 1974 and continued playing basketball on scholarship at Hampton University. He also played at Treasure Valley Community College. As Center and Forward, he was noted for scoring, strong defense and rebounding.  He was an avid fan of sports, loyally supporting the Chicago Bulls, Bears and Sox. Jonas had a passion for cars from a young age. He continued that love in his career at Ford Automotive, where he worked for over 25 years before retiring.  Jonas also enjoyed jazz, gardening, grooming his yard, barbecuing and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed his Christian ministry, faithfully serving his God as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses for 27 years.
Jonas married Janice in November 2002 and moved from Chicago to Indiana, where they resided for the past 15 years.  He is survived by his wife; sisters Mildred Jones and Margie Griffin of Chicago, IL and brothers Marion (Gail) Griffin of Detroit, MI and Jim (Joethelia) Griffin of Chicago, IL. Also cherishing his memory are his niece Renee Jones, and nephews, Lance Griffin, Golan (April) Griffin and Marlon (Michelle) Jones and a host of other family members. Though Jonas was the youngest, he often took on an older role helping his parents and family. He had a smile that lit up the room. Jonas was loved, respected and will be missed by family, friends, neighbors and work mates. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family wishes to convey their sincerest thanks to all who have extended their love, sympathies and support during this extremely difficult time. Thank you to the staff at VNA Hospice for their care in the final days and Moeller Funeral Home for handling the arrangements.
