It is with great sadness that the family of C. Virginia Palmer of Valparaiso affirms her peaceful passing early Wednesday morning, January 31, 2018. Virginia was born January 4, 1918 in Coeburn, VA to John “Emmett” & Clara (Noble) Porter; graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1935; and earned a BA in Language Arts from DePauw University in 1939.  On October 28, 1939, Virginia married Lewis E. Palmer and lived 60 plus loving and devoted years together.  They had two children, Carl E. and Virginia A.  Virginia and her husband, Lewis, owned and operated Palmer’s Hotel for Children in rural Valparaiso from 1970-1989. Their hotel provided many hundreds of children a wonderful, safe setting and environment while their parents were out of town on business or pleasure.  A true highpoint in both Virginia’s and Lewis’ lives was their 1990 research and publication of The Samuel and Sarah (Skinner) Palmer Family genealogy.  Their family history in America begins with the 1636 arrival of William Palmer of Great Ormsby, Norfolk County, England to Watertown, Massachusetts Colony, and follows each family from generation to generation through the mid/late 1980’s.  Surviving family include their children: Carl Palmer of Lake Station & Virginia Fox of Crown Point; four Grandchildren: Gregory L. (Debbie) Palmer, Wendi A. Fox, Travis L. Fox (Ashlyn Paris), Brandon “Cody” (Kortney) Fox; and seven Great Grandchildren: Logan A. Palmer, Carle A. Palmer,  Maxwell Sebastian Vasquez, Cheyenne G. Fox, Lyla R.  Fox, Weston J. Fox, Maverick L. Fox.  Lewis Palmer preceded Virginia in death in 2000. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: John & Bob Porter, Frances Minnick & Helen Ayers.
Visiting hours will be Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM (CST) immediately followed by a commemorative service at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Road, Valparaiso, IN 46383.  A brief burial service will be conducted Friday morning, February 9, 2018, 10:30 AM (CST), (11:30 AM EST) at the West Etna Community Church & Cemetery, 7557 N 650 W, Larwill, Whitley County IN 46764.
