Helen Mary Steinbrecher, 83, of Valparaiso passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.  She was born on February 3, 1935 to Oscar and Vera (Johnson) Keith.  She attended Valparaiso University and later graduated with high honors from Western Piedmont Community College in North Carolina.  Helen was a beloved ER nurse at Watauga County Hospital (Boone, NC) and later for 15 years at Porter Memorial Hospital, and was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.  She loved her ER work and was a natural caregiver whose calm and professional manner endeared her to colleagues and patients alike. In retirement she enjoyed quilting with the Lutheran church women of the area on Wednesday mornings.  On October 20, 1956 Helen was married to William (Bill) Steinbrecher who survives along with their children, Kathy Clanton of St. James, MO, Jon (Anne) Steinbrecher of Rocky River, OH, Paul Steinbrecher of Jacksonville, FL, and Carl (Nancy) Steinbrecher of San Diego, CA, 10 grandchildren, Steven, Sarah, Grace, Matt, Will, Ryan, Nick, Becca, Adrian and Zane and one great grandchild, Michael.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, H. Ward Keith.  Helen was very family oriented and put her own education on hold to assist her husband in finishing his own.  She shared responsibility with him as Valparaiso University residence hall directors at Lembke and Wehrenberg Halls for nine years.  Her children remember her as intense, focused, persevering, a conversationalist, opinionated, compassionate, and a back seat driver with a witty sense of humor.  She maintained many old friendships from Detroit’s Denby High School and Valparaiso University’s Alpha Phi Delta sorority and enjoyed reunions with them in various places in California, Las Vegas, Door County, WI, and Branson, MO,  as well as Valparaiso University homecomings.
A visitation will be held Friday from 5 – 7 pm and Saturday from 12:30 – 1:30 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1700 N. Monticello Park Dr.  The funeral service will begin at 1:30 pm on Saturday at the church with Rev. Steven Bongard and Rev. Don Williams officiating. Burial will take place at Graceland Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Valparaiso University.
