Angela Petra Duran, 75 of Hobart, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. She was born March 9, 1951, in Gary, Indiana to Angel and Juanita (Campos) Villarruel. Angie graduated from Thomas Edison High School in Gary, class of 1969. She made her career with Strack and Van Til in Merrillville for over 25 years in various positions, including cashier, receiving, and merchandising. Her customers and co-workers adored Angie, and she would tell anyone that they were the best part of her job. Throughout the 1980’s, Angie enjoyed coaching numerous youth girls’ softball and basketball teams in Lake Station. Angie was a phenomenal baker of sweet treats that she was delighted to share with her friends and family. She was a talented party planner, and looked forward to the holidays every year with her extravagant decorations and costumes. She was a devoted wife, proud mother, caring grandmother, and loving sister, who loved taking care of and spending time with her family more than anything. Angie will be fondly remembered and deeply missed every day.
On July 1, 1972, at the Holy Rosary Church in Gary, Angie married Armenio “Max” Duran, who preceded her in death in 2025. She is survived by their children: Melissa (Brian) Frye of Norfolk, VA, and Steve (Lili) Duran of Lake Station, IN; grandchildren: Evan Frye, Noehmi Lopez, and Sophia Angela Duran; siblings: Anita Gutierrez, Angel Villarruel Jr., Anna Iris (Jeff) Monnier, Albert Villarruel, and Alberta (Nelson) Blondet; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Chris Moreno and Olivia Cosme. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother-in-law, Daniel Gutierrez.
A celebration of Angie’s life will be held on August 9, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post 100, 1899 Central Avenue, Lake Station, IN, 46405.

Sooo sorry for your loss. Angie was a great friend to me. We go all the way back to 7th grade at Edison High School. We shared a lot of secrets together and a lot of stories. I met Angie through Iris. We worked together at Glen Park Bajery. She never had a bad word about anyone. She was a pleasure to work with.. Angie was more then a co worker she was my friend! She will be missed by everyone that knew her! -Jeanette Unland
