Richard “Dick” Rough, of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away August 26, 2026, at the age of 101. Born on December 21, 1924, in Franklin, Pennsylvania. Dick lived a long and full life shaped by service, dedication and love for family and community.
Dick was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University. During World War II he answered the call to serve his country and contributed to the nation’s wartime efforts through his work on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
In June 1947, he married the love of his life, Frances Kaplan, beginning a marriage that lasted over 70 years and supported a rich and active family life. Dick devoted over 35 years of his professional career to Bethlehem Steel Company.
Dick was deeply involved in professional and civic life. He was a member of the Iron and Steel Engineers and Iron and Steel Institute. He served on the Boards of the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce, Northern Indiana Bank, Ivy Tech, Porter Memorial Hospital, Porter Starke, and the United Way. He was a longtime member of the Valparaiso Country Club where he enjoyed the camaraderie as much as the game. In his personal time, Dick found great joy in friends, fishing, tennis, and golf.
He is survived by his children: Linda (Bob Pittman) of San Jose, CA, C. Richard Rough, Jr. (Shirley) of Beavercreek, OH, Nancy (Frank Schneider) of Royal Oak, MI, and Carol (Theresa) of Novato, CA. Dick was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him great pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and siblings, who undoubtedly welcomed him home with love.
Following cremation, he will be laid to rest next to Fran in Beavercreek, Ohio with a private ceremony.
