Elma “Joann” Fleming, 85 of Valparaiso, went home to be with her Lord that she loved, Monday, June 29, 2026. She was born on October 22, 1940 in Hammond, Indiana, the daughter of Roy and Elma (Chenault) Zust. Joann was truly full of life. To her, there were no strangers in the world—only friends she hadn’t met yet. She possessed a rare, welcoming energy and loved nothing more than staying closely connected with her friends and surrounding herself with her family.
Her grandchildren were the absolute light of her life. She shared a unique bond with each of them, famously gifting every single grandchild their own special nickname that they will cherish forever.
Joann was a woman of many passions. She loved crafting, crocheting beautiful keepsakes, dancing, catching a good movie, and gathering around the table for a lively game of dice. Known for her quick wit and great sense of humor, she loved to make people laugh. She was also the ultimate storyteller, famously keeping her family on the edge of their seats with her legendary scary stories. Her laughter and unforgettable tales will be deeply missed.
Joann is survived by her children, Shelly Hartz, Kelly (Doug) Eastling, Jim (Trace Hale) Fisher, Tracy (Larry) Huddleston, Raymond (Ginny) Fleming, Trisha (Mark) Kezler, and Kerrie (Tom) Riordan; 18 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Devin Roy Fleming; grandson, Derek Hartz; and siblings, Delores Hildebrand, Clarice Dexter, and Ron Zust.
A memorial service is being planned at Lake Hills Church 9209 W 85th Ave., Schererville, Indiana 46375 and will be announced at a later date.
