Erdogan Tufekcioglu, M.D. passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2026 in Valparaiso, IN at the age of 97. Son of Hamdi and Emine, nee Temizkan, Tufekcioglu. He was widowed in 2021 after 63 wonderful years of marriage to Joyce Doreen, nee Brookes, from England, and is survived by his 2 children.
Beloved prominent radiologist who also specialized in nuclear medicine and radiation therapy. His dynamic energy, attention to detail, amazing ability, and unwavering dedication to his patients became legendary. He was well known for finding the pathology that all others had missed. His 60 years of remarkable contributions to the health and well-being of all he encountered are beyond measure and will remain in memory.
Born in Izmir, Turkey in 1928. Completed military medical school in Ankara where he was the doctor in charge of 3000 military personnel. In 1959, he arrived in Chicago and held positions at Saint Francis Hospital and Little Company of Mary Medical Center. In 1968, he moved his family to Valparaiso, IN to begin work at Porter Memorial Hospital as their sole radiologist. He founded RANI (Radiologic Associates of Northwest Indiana) to form what became a group of a dozen radiologists who covered a large area of N.W. Indiana, including Schererville, Merrillville, Hobart, Portage, Michigan City, Kouts, Knox and Winamac.
He was also an outstanding educator as Director of the Porter Memorial Hospital School of Radiography for 14 years, where he delighted in presenting diplomas to all the graduating X-ray technicians. He also did locum tenens work around the U.S.A. for several years.
After retirement from medicine, he continued to focus on his business interests in Chicago including real estate and Turkish rug imports and sales. Some favorite pastimes were travel, nature, fitness, coin and stamp collecting. He will be greatly missed by so many; may he rest in eternal peace.
