Gail Ann Bickel, 89, of Valparaiso, IN, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, August 24, 2026. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, and her presence will be deeply missed.
Gail loved the life she had, whether sunset picnics on Lake Michigan, concerts at Ravinia, reading the daily Chicago Tribune, or engrossed in a thick book, cooking elegant meals to serve for friends and family. She participated in and had friends from PEO and Bridge Club. She had an active and healthy lifestyle of swimming, walking, and yoga. Gail also impacted the lives of countless children and parents while teaching for many years at Boone Grove and Porter Lakes Elementary Schools. She was an advocate for homeless women in Valparaiso and volunteered for both Hilltop Neighborhood House and The Caring Place. After her husband, Bob, took an early retirement, they became avid world travelers. Upon his passing, Gail continued her travels with Grannies on Safari.
Gail is survived by her sons: Kirk Bickel of Indianapolis, IN, and Todd (Wendy) Bickel of Arroyo Grande, CA; daughter, Julie Bickel of Valparaiso, IN; grandsons: Konner and Nathan; great-granddaughter, Malia; brother-in-law, Philip (Karen) Bickel; nieces: Amy (Jason) Yunker, Kelly (Nick) Nanos, Jennifer Heath; nephew, Jeff (Amy) Heath; and many great nieces, great nephews, and her beloved friends: Jackie Ostling, and Connie and Vince Pupillo. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Mildred O’Malley; her beloved husband of 49 years, Robert A. Bickel; brother, Bob O’Malley; sister, Pat Heath; brother-in-law, Rod Heath; and grandson, Chadwick O. Stone.
Per Gail’s request, following cremation no services will be held. The family requests that donations be made in Gail’s memory to The Caring Place or Hilltop Neighborhood House.
