George Wayne Walter, 88 of Wanatah passed away Saturday, August 10, 2024. He was born October 27, 1935, in LaPorte to Wayne & Millie (Heath) Walter, graduated from Clinton Township High School in 1953, received a B.S. in Business from Indiana University in 1957, and served proudly with the U.S. Naval Reserves. George began his career with First Merchants Bank in Hanna for several years, transitioned to teach 5th Grade at South Central School during the late sixties and early seventies, before spending nearly 40 years with REMC and retiring as their Meter Supervisor. He was a longtime member of Wanatah Lions Club, Westville Masonic Lodge, South Bend Scottish Rite where he achieved 33rd degree status, and a recent but enthusiastic member of Salem United Church of Christ. Getting together with family was always a high priority for George, especially for grandkids’ sporting events and vacation news. As for pure leisure time, he enjoyed mowing the lawn which was extended to include neighboring parcels, and drives in the car throughout the county, sometimes retracing his old meter route.
On October 12, 1958, he married Janice Eichelberg who preceded him in death in 2017. Survivors include their children; Jeff (Chris) Walter, Gregory (Wendy) Walter & Susan (Daryl) Goodwin all of Wanatah, grandchildren; Carrie (Nick) Miller, Evan (Ashley) Walter, Garrett (Mariah) Walter, Whitney (Shaun) McSparin, Emma (Steven) Wiegel, Madisyn Walter, Katlyn (Josh) Migler, Kaleb Goodwin & Kendra Goodwin, and 9 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Thursday from 3 – 7 pm at Wanatah Funeral Chapel, 309 N. Main St. A private funeral service will be held Friday with entombment at Graceland Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Salem U.C.C., 302 S. Main St., Wanatah, IN 46390.
