Jeanette “Jean” Frederick, 84 of Valparaiso, passed away July 20, 2026. She was born August 21, 1941, in Hammond, IN, to the late Leslie and Dorothy (Kilmer) Cowles. Jean graduated from Hammond Tech High School. She taught swimming lessons at the Valparaiso YMCA to infants, young children, and handicapped children for many years. Jean also became a water safety instructor, enabling her to teach and certify lifeguards. She later went into banking, retiring from First Trust Credit Union. In retirement, Jean became a world traveler, going to Alaska, Australia, Turkey, Germany, France, and Italy. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, and spending time at the Valparaiso YMCA where she exercised, socialized, and played pickleball.

On October 21, 1960, she married James “Jim” Frederick, Sr., who preceded her in death in 2008. She is survived by their children: Joyce (Dave) Robinson, Jeri (Paul) Mateer, James “Jay” (Tracy) Frederick, Jr., all of Valparaiso; grandchildren: David Robinson, Jess Mateer, Becki Mateer, and J.R. (Hannah) Frederick III; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister, Judy Riley.

A visitation will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with a funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Angelcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Valparaiso Lions Club or Dunes Hospice.
