It is with heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of Matthew Patrick Lowenthal on September 24, 2026. Matt was born on February 8, 2007, to Michael and Aimee (Borns) Lowenthal.
From an early age, baseball became an important part of his life. His dad, Mike, coached him through elementary and middle school, sharing those early years of practices, games, and memories. He grew up playing baseball with his friends, cousins, and with the Morgan Township community around him. Matt played baseball all 4 years of high school, eventually becoming a starting outfielder on the Cherokee Semi-State baseball team in 2024. Those years on the field were an important part of his story and something his friends and family will remember.
After graduating from Morgan Township High School in 2025, Matt began building his future in a different kind of field. He was proud to be accepted into the I.B.E.W Local 531 and had just begun his second year in the electrical apprenticeship. Matt was well-liked and respected by his peers who he always kept on their toes with his playful shenanigans.
And then there was his truck. Matt's 2005 Ford F-250 diesel was his pride and joy, one of those possessions that becomes part of someone's identity and a familiar part of the memories people have of them. He was often found in the pole barn working on his truck with his friends. Matt loved feeling the wind in his face whether it was riding a jet ski, driving his truck or motorcycle, or carving down a mountain on his snowboard.
Matt leaves behind his parents, Michael and Aimee Lowenthal of Morgan Township, his sisters, Caitlin and Josie Lowenthal, his Meena (grandmother), Jay Borns, and his grandparents, John and Coleen Lowenthal. He also leaves behind his aunt, Ambur Lowenthal and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends that he adored. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Patrick Borns; his grandmother, Sheila Liebig; and his uncle, Michael Borns.
Though his life was far too short, Matt's story was still being written. Whether it was game night with his family, hanging out with his friends, or his late-night Dairy Queen runs, Matt was always living in the moment. He was sentimental, loved adventure, and could be stubborn at times. He leaves behind the memories made on baseball fields, the work he was learning, the things he was proud of, and most importantly, the people who love him.
A reception for Matthew will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Moeller Funeral Home & Crematory in Valparaiso, IN from 2:00 pm-6:00pm. A memorial service will follow at 6:00 pm. Pastor Matt Willingham will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made through Matt's GoFundMe page to benefit underprivileged children learning to play baseball which was set up by some of his closest friends with the Lowenthal family's blessing. https://gofund.me/eb9d0002a
GUESTBOOK
Our deepest condolences. We are thinking of you and yours. -Todd & Jen Cole
I have only known Matt for 3 months while working together building the westville prison. In that short time I saw a vibrant young person start to spread his wings and grab life by the horns. Matt was quiet, but happy, stubborn but willing to learn. He could be given a task and get it done. I saw him like one of my kids, after all I came up in the same apprenticeship with his dad. Matt had a full heart and was ready to live life to the fullest. It is with great sorrow and disbelief that he is now gone. I send my thoughts and prayers to his family. May Matt live on in the many memories he created with friends and family. Rest easy Matt til we meet again. Sister Sunshine 531. -Suzette Letson
