Ronald Montania, 80, of Valparaiso passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2026. He was born June 24, 1946, in Gary, Indiana to Elmer & Clara (Becker) Montania, graduated from Portage High School in 1964. Ron served proudly with the U.S. Navy from 1968 – 74 attaining the rank of Second-Class Petty Officer. His military service allowed him to train as a helicopter pilot which required him to fly personnel from New Zealand to Antarctica on multiple occasions. Ron received a bachelor’s degree in German from Indiana University Northwest and had fond memories of a summer immersion program that he was allowed to spend in Germany. His career at U.S. Steel began as a machinist in 1979 and concluded as an Environmental Engineer in 2005.
He was a member of Heritage Lutheran Church since 1979 where he had been active as an usher. If you spent any meaningful time with Ron, he would have undoubtedly bragged a bit about his prowess as a sprint car racer on dirt tracks, his love of Indy car racing and the “Dodge” automotive brand. His mild manner seemed to defy the adrenaline rush activities that he was drawn to. His dedicated commitment as a Red Cross blood donor may have helped to balance out his daredevil antics.
Survivors include his children: Lisa (Gene) Koroncz & Matthew Montania both of Valparaiso, and grandsons: Ryan Gengnagel (Rylei Mullet) & Dean Gengnagel. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Tim Montania in 2009 and the mother of his children, Susan Montania in 2014.
A visitation will be held Friday, July 31st from 10:30 am – 12 noon at Heritage Lutheran Church, 308 N. Washington St., Valparaiso with funeral service beginning at 12:00 noon, Rev. Stan Temme officiating with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Portage. Memorial donations may be made to Heritage Lutheran Church.

Very sorry to hear this news about my friend Ron. Sweet boy in my class of 1964; we shared the same birthday at the same hospital. Although somewhat shy and quiet he had a great sense of humor. I remember his love of car racing and when he went to racing school he was so excited to get the opportunity to drive. RIP dear friend. -Jo Ann Nellessen
