Eugene R. Johnson, 85, of Valparaiso passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 10, 2024. He was born April 29, 1938 in Washington Township to Arthur & Jessie (Blachly) Johnson and graduated from Washington Township High School in 1956. Gene was a proud farmer his entire life in Porter County. He greatly enjoyed walleye fishing trips in Canada, playing Yahtzee at home nearly every night, cheering on his beloved Chicago Cubs and watching college basketball games on television – especially the Purdue Boilermakers. More than anything, it was his marriage (52 years) to his wife Joan, and life with their four boys and grandchildren that Gene cherished most.
On September 1, 1962 he married Joan Prentiss who preceded him in death in 2015. Gene is survived by his children: Christopher (Terry) Johnson of Grosse Ile, MI, Daniel (Kathy) Johnson, Steven (Rhonda) Johnson & Jack (Carla) Johnson all of Valparaiso, grandchildren: Caitlin (Matt) Theiser, David Johnson, Allison Johnson, J. Wendy, Jessica (Brady) Smith, Joel Johnson (Dylan Pesesky), Madeline Johnson, Nolan (Brianne) Johnson, Jacob, Abigail, Gillian & Mary Johnson, and great-grandchildren: Bennett, Lexi, Logan, Lily, Eva & Kylynn, along with many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Janet Deverter, Arthur & Loren Johnson.
All services will be held at Angelcrest Cemetery Chapel (180 E. 600 N.) in Valparaiso, on Saturday, February 17, 2024. A visitation will be held from 10am-12pm, with a funeral service and burial to follow beginning at 12pm – officiated by Pastor Denny Smith of Valley Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
