Raymond “Ray” G. Wisneski, 86 of Portage, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 in Valparaiso. He was born on November 21, 1937 in Braddock, PA to Frank and Elizabeth (Mraz) Wisneski and earned his bachelor’s degree from Grove City College. He made his career as a metallurgical engineer beginning at US Steel in the 60’s and made his way to Sterling Steel in 1983, where he proudly worked in the labs up until May of this year, ending his over 50 year stint there. He dedicated his life to his craft. A true engineer who enjoyed tinkering, building, and fixing anything; who had every tool imaginable, and if he didn’t have a tool—he would invent it! Ray loved working on projects and meticulously knew all the ins and outs of his house to keep it in tip top shape. Speaking of the outs, he had a gorgeous garden with tomatoes and flowers which his children remember fondly. If you knew Ray, you knew of his humble heart and just how hard he worked, truly an impressive and inspirational man. He loved the opportunity to mentor the next generation with his talent and knowledge. Just when you think you knew everything about Ray, you would learn more of his past with his intriguing stories, including his time on his college soccer team. He was an avid sports fan, rooting on the Chicago Cubs and Bears. His wit, determination, and brilliant mind will be dearly missed.
On November 19, 1960 in Emlenton, PA, Raymond married Margaret “Peg” Davis, who preceded him in death in October of 2014. Survivors include their children: Richard Wisneski, Lynne (Michael) Wisneski-Clumb, and Kim (Brian) Ambler; sister, Patricia (Elmer) Komaromy; and granddaughters: Shauna Croarkin and Ashley Clumb. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Kaitlin Croarkin.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso beginning at 10:00 AM.

GUESTBOOK

So sorry to hear of Ray’s passing. The time we spent in Portage as his neighbor was one of the hi lights of my life. We sure had good times together. I especially remember he and Peg putting the pool together in mid May. Peg would be trying to hold the sides up while Ray bolted them together. Once in a while they ended up shouting at each other and Billie and I would just chuckle. Once the pool was up Ray and I would spend a hot summers night just standing in the deep end and drink beer. What great times!! -Ron Swelstad
