James Davis McCotter, 79 of Valparaiso, IN, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025. He was born November 26, 1945, in Chicago, IL, to the late Dorian and Eva (Hammond) McCotter. Jim graduated from Fenger High School in Chicago, and went on to proudly serve in the United States Navy as an Electrician’s Mate. Jim traveled the world on the USS Sandoval and served in the Vietnam War. After briefly working for the railroad, Jim began a career with the Ford Motor Company Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights, IL, as an Electrician, and retired after 34 years as a Superintendent. Following his retirement, Jim took up a part time job delivering medication for the Fagen Pharmacy in Valparaiso, which allowed him to meet many lovely people.
Growing up, Jim was very active in Boy Scouts and even earned the rank of Star. In his younger years, Jim enjoyed playing softball and specialized as the catcher, which earned him the nickname “Jimmy the Catcher”. He also played in bowling leagues, loved to dance, and play his music loud. Jim was raised as a Presbyterian, but after meeting his wife, became a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. Jim loved animals and over the years gave many pets a loving home. He was a tenderhearted and selfless man with a great sense of humor and quick wit. Though known for his quiet and softspoken nature, you would often be met with a “Howdy” when Jim greeted you. He was a loving and devoted family man, who worked hard to provide for his wife and children. Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
On May 12, 1973, in Chicago, Jim married the love of his life, Cheryl Brazzale, who survives, along with their children: Brandi Lee (Thomas) Foreman of Valparaiso, Eric J. McCotter of Philadelphia, PA, Raven (Dave) Foreman of Wanatah, Ashley (Wesley) Kozuszek of Porter; grandchildren: Remington, Liam, Dylanger, Londyn, Finley, Wyley, and Hailey; and lifelong best friend, Gerry Silver. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carol McCotter; and his boxer, Harper.
A Celebration of Jim’s life will be announced at a later date. He will be laid to rest privately at Angelcrest Cemetery.

Cheryl, My sincerest condolences for your present loss of Jim. Though it's been years, I have very fond memories of the two of you as Lor and I were young girls popping in and out of her sister and her husband's lives. I always viewed the two of you as such a great couple, extremely in tune with each other and having the type of relationship to strive for. Though I know you will miss him dearly, I know your strong faith will carry you through. You two have built a wonderful family and his legacy will continue in your children and grandchildren. My prayers, I offer for your comfort and assurance that you will meet again. With great fondness, -Kathy Johnston Ragin
