James “Jim” Micu, 76 of Valparaiso, IN, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2025. He was born April 29, 1948, in Gary, IN, to John and Helen (Maryne) Micu. Jim graduated from Horace Mann High School, and proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He went on to make his career as a Steelworker with US Gary Works in the blast furnace and plate mill. Jim enjoyed spending summers with his wife, Brenda, at Tall Sycamore Campground and France Park Campground in Logansport, sharing in campfires with the many friends he made along the way. He loved to cook, loved to eat, and loved to cheer on the Chicago Bears and Cubs as a loyal fan. Jim will be remembered as being full of life and having a joyful personality. He will be dearly missed.

On July 15, 1987, Jim married the love of his life, Brenda Sponton, who survives, along with sons: Robert Wagner of Bloomington, IN, William (Kerry) Wagner of Zionsville, IN, and Richard (Mary-Anne) Wagner of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren: Jack and Charlie Wagner, and Calum (Monika) Wagner; and sister, Jennifer Christie. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Micu; father, John Micu; and stepmother, Margie Micu.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with a celebration of life service beginning at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jim’s name to the Indy Honor Flight, PO Box 10, Plainfield, IN 46168. I last saw Jim at a Horace Mann reunion at the Pavilion several years ago. I knew Jim and his sister Jennifer from our days at Horace Mann. I saw Jim and his dad often during my summer college days working at US Steel. A sterling family indeed. I will always remember Jim for his sense of humor and positive outlook on life.
