Angeline M. Szalmasagi, 79, of Portage passed away Thursday, April 24, 2025. She was born April 15, 1946 in Gary, IN to Joseph & Mary (Szabo) Fernandez. Angie served proudly with the U.S. Naval Reserves for over 20 years attaining the rank of Petty Officer First Class. She made her career with the Anderson Company for over 40 years working in their production and shipping departments.  After retirement she put her heart into caring for others, going the extra mile at the Bethesda group home in Valparaiso and with the “Home Instead” program, incorporating her excellent cooking skills and TLC to make everyone feel as if they were a family member. Within her own family Angie made the extra effort to express her care over the many miles that her family had spread to show her love for each child, grandchild, great-grandchild and their spouses. Always a hard worker, and a truly beautiful and patriotic woman, she endeared herself to others with her humor and genuine empathy. Over the years, her four-legged friends were also beneficiaries of her talents and loving manner and they seemed to reciprocate enthusiastically.

Survivors include her daughter, Ruth Ann (Allen) Ferreira of Utah, grandchildren: Jules Ferreira (Brittany), Bradley Ferreira (Megan Watch) & Lily Ferreira (Riley Jensen), great-grandchildren: Alistair, Gideon, Margot & Bronwen, brothers, Richard & David Fernandez, and her former husband, Jerry Szalmasagi. Angie’s best friend Val and her family must also be counted among those that will miss her presence greatly. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, April 30th from 2 – 4 pm at Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso with military honors and funeral service beginning at 4:00pm.  Memorial donations may be made to Lakeshore PAWS. Click here to watch the recorded funeral service.
