In Loving Memory of Isabelle M. Smaroff
December 18, 1938 – October 30, 2025
Valparaiso, Indiana

It is with deep love and sorrow that we share the passing of Isabelle M. Smaroff  at 86 – cherished mother and grandmother, devoted friend and neighbor, and respected pillar of Valparaiso. Isabelle departed this life peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of generosity, warmth, and steadfast commitment to her family, friends, and community. Her life was defined by compassionate service to others, and she was treasured for her kind heart and strong faith.

Born on December 18, 1938, in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania, Isabelle grew up surrounded by friends and her mother’s Italian cooking. She was crowned May Queen in 1956, a testament to her vibrant spirit, and soon after, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert “Bob”. Their move to Valparaiso marked the start of a new chapter, where they raised their family and became deeply involved in the community. Isabelle held several roles as Executive Assistant and Director of Hospital Volunteers at Porter Memorial, where her leadership and kindness were evident to all.

A tireless volunteer, Isabelle served as a board member for Kiwanis and the VNA Foundation, and was an active participant in St. Paul Catholic Church and numerous community initiatives. She dedicated her time and energy to uplifting others, always ready to lend a helping hand. Isabelle was known for her thoughtful care packages and legendary open-door hospitality – no one ever left her home without eating something first and usually taking something special with them. Her kindness touched all who met her, making every guest feel truly at home.

Isabelle was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 43 years, Bob Smaroff, who passed away 26 years ago. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Desirée; her son, Duke and his wife Carrie; and her grandchildren: Nick, Robert, Tiffany, and Anthony (Desirée); and Zach, Ben, and Kate (Duke). Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church 1855 Harrison Blvd., Valparaiso on November 29, 2025 at 10:00 AM with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. Interment of ashes will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to The Kiwanis Foundation of Valparaiso, PO Box 1661; Valparaiso, IN 46384 or online by PayPal to Valparaiso Kiwanis Foundation, Inc., honoring Isabelle’s lifelong dedication to service and kindness.

Isabelle’s spirit of generosity and unwavering love for family and friends will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her memory be a blessing to all.

According to our mother, Josephine Scicchitano Sommariva, Isabelle was the most adorable, well behaved little girl who grew up to be a faithful wife, mother and devoted daughter to her parents & her Aunt Jo. We often were compared to Isabelle in terms such as “When you girls grow up, I hope you’re just like Isabelle” Isabelle certainly lived a life of honor and respect for and by others. Her faith was strong. Truly a woman to emulate. In Condolences, -Patricia Sommariva Anderson and Arlene Sommariva Dailey

My sincerest sympathies to the Smaroff family. Isabelle was a very sweet lady and a devoted and generous Kiwanian. Isabelle and I attended a puppy training class together at Vale Park Veterinary Hospital many, many years ago. We shared the trials and tribulations of raising a pup.
