John G. Beck, 96, of Wanatah, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2025. He was born on May 14, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Harry and Louise (Windahl) Beck.
John graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1947 and proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard from 1950 to 1953. He began his career as a carpenter building homes and later retired from McGill’s after 30 years of dedicated service.
A longtime member of the American Legion, John loved working with his hands, tending to his vegetable garden, and spending time outdoors. He was an avid hunter who also enjoyed playing pool and bowling with friends. Though he was a quiet man who preferred to keep to himself, John will be fondly remembered for his gentle spirit, generous heart, and the love he shared with those closest to him.
John is survived by his daughter, Laurette Barfield; granddaughter, Chasity (Thomas) Jackson; great-grandchildren, Cyliena Briggs, and Janaya, Destiny, and Thomas Christian Jackson; sister, Lois Wampler; nephew, Jeff (Ying) Wampler; and great-nephews, Helmut and Albert Wampler. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth Beck; sisters, Beverly and Gladys Beck; brother, Richard Beck; and granddaughter, Arica Briggs.
A private graveside service will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shared their love, prayers, and support. Memorial contributions in John’s honor may be made to the American Legion or to a charity of your choice.
