Ida Jean Jones, 75 of Valparaiso, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025.  She was born on December 19, 1949 in Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of Houston and Rosie Lee (Denton) King.  A graduate from Geeter High School in Memphis, Ida Jean attended Jones Commercial Business School.  She worked in administration for the State of Illinois, as a daycare provider with Angel Haven’s Day Care, and a secretary for Union Community Church UCC.  Ida Jean was a founding member of Union Community Church United Church of Christ, Valparaiso and was a co-founder of Southshore Unemployment Union and Green Thumb Urban Gardening in Chicago, IL.  She was a master gardener and herbalist. Ida loved to sing and was a member of the church choir.

On August 16, 1980, Ida Jean married Rev. Gregory A. Jones who survives along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Houston King, Jr., and sister, Dorothy Jean Glover.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025 from 10:00-11:00 AM at Moeller Funeral Home 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with a Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 AM. Cremation will follow at Angelcrest Crematory, Valparaiso.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Union Community Church United Church of Christ Restoration Project or the James L. Kingsland Cultural Hub ECHO Gatherings.

My deepest condolences to the family of Ida Jean Jones. I shall forever cherish the memories of my beloved friend and former classmate at Geeter in Memphis Tennessee. Ida was such an amazing, compassionate and sweet Soul. After reading her brief biography I can see she lived an amazing and remarkable life with her husband, church family and community. In other words she lived up to her name. In essence, Ida is a strong name with roots in diligent work, nature, and spiritual reverence. God has called her home from labor to reward.
