Yvonne “Vonnie” Eckert, 86 of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away Friday, March 13, 2026. She was born September 14, 1939, in Belleville, IL to Alvin and “Nonie” Eckert. Vonnie graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in Art. She began her career as an Art Teacher before opening her own monogram and fine sportswear shop in Evanston, Illinois, which she ran for many years. Later Vonnie managed Mount Sinai, a resale shop in Chicago, which piqued her interest in antiques. In 1992, Vonnie retired to Indiana where she continued to grow her collection of antiques and spent time cooking. Vonnie loved animals of all kinds and was a frequent donor to the Independent Cat Society in Westville. She and her companion, Karla, enjoyed spending time at their cabin and fishing together. Vonnie was a charming lady who could strike up a conversation with anyone she met. She will be dearly missed.
Vonnie is survived by her loving companion, Karla Halford, and good friend, Judy Shackelford. She was preceded in death by her parents, and favorite dog, Stevie.
To honor Yvonne’s wishes, no services will be held. Donations may be made in Yvonne’s name to the Independent Cat Society, 4061 S. County Line Rd., Westville, IN 46391, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
GUESTBOOK
My dear Karla, I’m so terribly sorry about the loss of your Yvonne. I never got to meet her but, of course, I know I would have liked her. Your Vonnie died on March 13th, the same day but a year after my Jim and his Mom, Phyllis, a few years before. I believe there must be a very special place in Heaven for these particular sweet souls. I am keeping you in my heart & prayers Karla. I’m so, so sorry. God bless you my friend. -Patty Quigley
