Robert S. Sojka, 82, of Valparaiso, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026. He was born August 4, 1943, in East Chicago, Indiana, to the late Edmund and Josephine (Dobosz) Sojka.

A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Bob dedicated his life to shaping young people—as a teacher, coach, and mentor. He taught physical education and health for the School City of Hammond at Edison and Eggers Schools, retiring in 2003 after 27 years of service. During his time there, he coached football, track, and basketball, served as a middle school athletic director, started a chess club, and helped launch a spelling bee program. Bob brought energy, creativity, and a deep sense of commitment to everything he did. He was always looking for ways to give his students more—raising money to support athletic programs, organizing trips to Florida for middle school students year after year, and finding new ways to engage them beyond the classroom. As a coach and athletic director, he took particular pride in building strong programs and making sure his teams were challenged and prepared for what came next—on and off the field.

Following his retirement, Bob continued doing what he loved in Arizona, teaching and coaching at St. Matthew Elementary School in the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix from 2003 to 2013. He also coached at Bourgade Catholic High School as an offensive line coach. Upon returning to Northwest Indiana, he remained active in coaching, serving as freshman football coach at Portage High School and as an offensive line coach at Gavit High School.

Beyond his professional life, Bob loved to travel and spend time with his wife, Ann Marie—especially in Harbor Springs, Michigan, a place that brought him great joy.He also had a deep love for sports at any level and was always up for a good conversation about them.

On November 18, 1967, Bob married the love of his life, Ann Marie (Chrustowski), who survives him. He is also survived by his children, Noelle (Chad) Sojka-Howell and Christopher Sojka; his brother, William (Janice) Sojka; brother-in-law, Joseph (Joan) Chrustowski; his nieces and nephews; and his daughter Noelle’s family, including Chad and his children, Mary, Lilly, and Colton Howell. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edmund Sojka.

A private memorial service will be held at Moeller Funeral Home in Valparaiso.
