Michael James McCauley, 46 of Kouts, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, November 26, 2022.
Michael was the loving husband of Amy (Hinrichs) McCauley; father to Jennifer Wittmer and Brandon McCauley; soon to be grandfather to the next generation; son of Deborah McCauley; brother of Marie Franke, Meghan Loof, and Melissa McCauley; grandson of Robert McGuire; and uncle to many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Karen McGuire.
Born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Michael spent his youth thriving in the diversity of the auto mechanic industry before sacrificing it all to support his new wife and young family. Moving to Rapid City to explore new opportunities, Michael sacrificed everything to further his education and ultimately provide even more for his family. Michael graduated South Dakota School Of Mines with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering. With his official degree the family of 4 were uprooted and replanted in Kouts, Indiana, where Michael continued to thrive both at home and at work. Michael was always coming up with new projects, tinkering and enjoying his newfound life of sitting back with the love of his life, Amy McCauley, to watch as his two children thrived in the world he helped create.
Michael was taken too soon at the age of 46. His whole life was ahead of him, and he will be dearly missed, but always thought of every time a new project is started, a tool is bought, a crazy idea, or something as simple as a t-shirt that says “OMG.”
A visitation will be held on Friday, December 2, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Kosanke Funeral Home (new location), 309 S. Main St., Kouts, IN, with a memorial service beginning at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN). Your family will miss you, Michael. We love you so much.

To your family: I cannot imagine the pain and sadness you all feel but know his spirit is with you. His memories are with you and you will carry those memories every step of the way. All of his teaching will be past down from years to come. His memory will soon bring a smile to your face when you speak his name. While we never met, it is apparent the tremendous loss he is to you, Amy, and your family. So sorry. My condolences for your tremendous loss. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work for, and with, Mike for a couple years in the steel mill. Regardless of the situation, he always managed to maintain a positive and professional attitude. And his sense of humor created a good environment for all of us to work in. It will always remain a mystery as to why God takes good people far too soon. Mike always looked out for me and my well-being. He was one of my Guardian Angels here on earth. I considered Mike a friend as my boss. He was a great leader on the job and always willing to talk when needed. I loved his personality, commitment to excellence, and his desire to see the work get accomplished.
