Alice Caroline Deardorff, 88 of Kouts, IN, passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2025. She was born January 4, 1937, at home in Medaryville, IN to the late Oscar J. Selmer and Clara L. (Shedrow) Selmer. Alice graduated from Medaryville High School, and Indiana State University with a bachelor's degree in Business. She began her career with Nipsco, before starting a family, and later went on to become an Administrative Assistant with the Porter County Water and Soil District. Alice enjoyed antique glassware, studying history, and archaeology, and even took classes at Purdue and went on digs to learn more. She was into re-enacting at festivals with her daughter, sharing historical information with visitors. Together they also volunteered at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Alice will be remembered as a loving caretaker of her family.

Alice is survived by her children: Cynthia K. Deardorff of Kouts, and Todd J. Deardorff of Wheatfield; sister, Arlos Cushing; grandson, Landen Scott Deardorff; and her grandson’s mother, Theresa Rowe.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EST at Saint John Church, 13696 W. 400 N., Medaryville, IN, with a funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m. EST. Burial will follow at Saint John Cemetery, Medaryville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the church or Dunes Hospice, 4711 Evans Ave., Valparaiso, IN 46383.

When I think back on all of the times that I spent time with Alice the thing that I remember most is that she always had a big smile. She was a such a sweet, kind person who was a joy to be around. We met Alice and her Daughter Cindy along with Judy at the feast a long time ago and another event Cindy put on . She was a pleasure to meet and will be sorely missing. -David Vasa
