Barbara Anne Miller, 88 of Valparaiso, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. She was born near Greencastle, IN on August 16, 1935 and grew up in and attended the Fillmore, IN schools. In 1959, she graduated from Indiana State University in Terre Haute with a degree in Elementary Education and in 1964, she received a Master’s Degree from Indiana University, Bloomington. She taught at Marquette Elementary in Miller Section of Gary for 5 years and later taught remedial reading at Washington Twp. Elementary in Porter County for 9 years. She also received a Reading Certification from Valparaiso University in the 1970s.
After moving to Valparaiso in 1966, she became a member of the First Presbyterian Church serving as an Elder, Clerk of Session, teaching Sunday School, moderator of Presbyterian Women, on PW Presbytery Board, Treasurer and Volunteer for the Resale Shop. When she was President of the Whispering Pines Health Care Center, she started the first inpatient Hospice Center there. Barbara was a Life Member with over 50 years with American Association of University Women in Valparaiso as well as a member of Chapter DQ of the PEO Sisterhood for over 35 years.
On January 25, 1964 at the First Presbyterian Church in Gary, Barbara married Sterling G. Miller who survives along with daughters Amy Lynn Miller of Bellevue, WA and Beth Anne Miller of Valparaiso, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Edna (Roach) Chadd; and brother, William J. Chadd.

Barb was a valued colleague at Washington Township School. She cared deeply for her students and helped the classroom teachers with ideas for interventions for those children and others. May she rest in peace. -Barbara Geiss
