Barbara Jane Acerbi, of Kenosha, Wisconsin passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2025, on her 90th birthday, at Avalon Springs Assisted Living in Valparaiso, Indiana.  She was born on July 22, 1935, in Kenosha to become the only child of Harry & Elvera (Larson) Nelson and attended Bradford High School in Kenosha.  When Barb got an offer for a “good job” with Bell Telephone Company as a Switchboard Operator she began her career at which she quickly excelled. As fate would have it, she happened to work with another young lady named Dolly Acerbi who set her up on a date with her brother, Carl Acerbi, Jr.  To say that the rest is history wouldn’t allow us to divulge their deep devotion to each other and the romantic story of how they eloped to Waukegan, Illinois for their marriage. She was then hired by Jockey International in Kenosha who liked her voice and style so much they used her for all of their automated telephone communications. Upon retirement she spent 20 fun-filled years living in Las Vegas before spending the last 9 years in Valparaiso with the encouragement of her daughter.  Barb became a beloved friend to nearly everyone in her realm which can be attributed to her quick wit, sassy humor, fun attitude and sunny disposition.  All who knew and met her liked her!  As much as she liked to cook, she would prefer to go out for dinner and a movie.  If she were allowed to interject at this point, she would tell you to “be good, behave, be careful, and be nice!”

On July 9, 1954, in Waukegan, Illinois she married Carl F. Acerbi, Jr. who preceded her in death on December 6, 2023. Her 69 years with Carl proved to be rewarding for each of them as they supported one another in nearly every endeavor. Survivors include their children: Jeff (Laura) Acerbi of Wisconsin & Dawn (Paul) Sciarra of Valparaiso, grandchildren: Paul & Michael Sciarra, and many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Sunday, August 17th, beginning at 1:00 pm at Birchwood in Bristol, Wisconsin. Special appreciation goes to Avalon Springs and Dunes Hospice for their wonderful and attentive care.  Memorial donations may be made to the Dunes Hospice Foundation
