Barbara L. Tanke, 96 of Valparaiso, IN, passed away Friday, May 9, 2025. She was born on January 23, 1929, in Valparaiso to the late Elmer and Lillian (Rezac) Lemster.  Barb was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Once she became an “empty nester” she enjoyed volunteering on the Bookmobile in addition to taking trips to Chicago on the South Shore. Once there she would enjoy lunch at Marshall Fields and an afternoon at the Art Institute. In Valpo you could find her at Strongbows with a turkey sandwich or at the Old Style with a plate of prime rib. She was able to spend more time on the farm with her Granddaughter Michele, who held a special place in her heart, during Michele’s high school years in IN. In her later years she enjoyed the park system and watching the children play sports as long as she had a chocolate soda with her. She treasured her trips to the Farmer’s Market and was looking forward to the summer opening.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Mary Louise Tanke; son, William C. Tanke; and granddaughter, Michele Tanke-Juska. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William “Bill” Tanke.

A private graveside service will be held at Maplewood Cemetery in Valparaiso. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Barbara’s name to Porter County Friends of the Library.
