Beverly A. Hackett, 90, of Valparaiso passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2025. She was born April 27, 1934, in East Gary, Indiana to G. Percy & Hazel (Niehaus) Leathurby and graduated from East Gary High School. Beverly began her career serving briefly as a telephone operator, then several years as a secretary in the Biology Department at Valparaiso University before landing her forever job as a teller at First Federal Saving & Loan/Indiana Federal to conclude her working years. She was an active member of Valparaiso First United Methodist Church involving herself in a myriad of their committees and projects over the decades. Family was of paramount importance to Beverly, and she instilled this value utilizing her spitfire personality along with a warrior mentality. It was exactly these traits that formed her foundation for life, helped nurture and guide her children and endeared her to anyone who appreciated a job well-done.
On March 10, 1956, she married Richard Hackett who preceded her in death on April 7, 2025. Survivors include their children: Martin “Marty” (Pam) Hackett of Valparaiso, Antoinette “Toni” Schroeder of Valparaiso & Andrea (Jeff) Byerman of Knox, grandchildren: Brian Norris, Christian (Joanna) Hackett, Kiersten (Jake) Byerman, Blake Byerman & Elizabeth (Bryan) Rufo, and great-grandchildren: Gianna, Julian, Atticus & Naomi. She was also preceded in death by granddaughters, Alexis Schroeder & Suzannah Carlin, and siblings, Paul Leathurby & Mae Stevers.
A visitation will be held Monday from 4 - 7 pm at Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso and Tuesday from 9:30 – 10:30 am at church. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at First United Methodist Church of Valparaiso, 103 N. Franklin St. beginning at 10:30 am with entombment following at Graceland mausoleum. Memorial donations may be made to the VNA Hospice of NWI.
