Bruce James, 65 of Portage, IN, passed away Friday, October 6, 2023. He was born January 12, 1958, in Hartford, KY to Joe and Shirley (Moore) James. Bruce graduated from Portage High School in 1976. He began his career with Able Disposal in Chesterton as a Diesel Mechanic and retired as a General Manager. Bruce enjoyed fishing, going to the shooting range, and supporting his grandchildren at their sporting events. Bruce always put his family first, and was there for his kids whenever they needed a hand with a home project or mechanical issue. He will be remembered for the wisdom he imparted to others, and his strong-willed personality. Bruce was a loving and devoted husband, father, and “Papa”, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
On November 10, 1979, Bruce married Kathy Vandevelde, who survives, along with their children: John (Kara) James of Valparaiso, Jason James of Portage, and Jessica (Adam) James-Shively of Portage; daughter-in-law, Jennifer James; grandchildren: Logan, Evan, Landon, Hunter, Lexie, Lillian, and Jackson; great-granddaughter, Lydia; and brothers: Jerry James and Brian James. He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandson, Liam.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with a funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Angelcrest Cemetery.
