Caleb Alexander Ortiz, age 20, left this earth on March 6, 2026, when he drove into a tree on a dark, wet, country road with an unexpected curve. We’d do anything to change the trajectory of that night.
Caleb was smart, funny, and always up for an adventure. He will be remembered for his warm hugs - you knew he meant it when he hugged you - and his generous spirit. Caleb loved his family and friends fiercely. His smile could light up a room. He could make friends anywhere, but he picked those closest to him with care. However, if you wronged Caleb, you’d know it - he wasn’t one to mince words.
He was ALWAYS losing things. His keys, his debit card, his license, his phone … all.the.time.
He loved family traditions. If we tried to mix things up, he set us straight.
Caleb graduated from Valparaiso High School in 2024. He was a proud member of the 2022 Viking State Championship team, also earning special recognition for his academic achievements by the Indiana Football Coaches Association.
He was a talented clarinet player. He played in the Indiana All State Bands for three years and won countless gold medals at the ISSMA competitions. He was a member of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra, and he attended IU’s Jacob’s School of Music as a clarinet performance major. He was so proud to be selected to attend JSOM.
Caleb began working at Tree Frog Tree Service after graduation, and he learned that he really liked cutting down trees! He worked whenever he was home from IU and found joy in it, ultimately deciding to leave IU and work full time. He liked the physical rigor tree cutting required and probably the risk and adrenaline rush that goes with downing trees. He was considering returning to school to become an arborist, and he was looking forward to starting the next chapter of his life before his sudden departure. Caleb will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his parents, Richard and Jennifer Ortiz, his brother, Nathan Ortiz (Cecily), grandmother, Clara Frailey, loving partner, Izzy DeHaan, a large extended family, and his sweet kitty, Licorice. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, David Lawrence Frailey, and grandmother, Maria Esther Vallejo Ortiz.
We will gather to remember Caleb from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso. Services to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Recovery Connection, checks made payable to Recovery Connection. Donate online at www.recoveryconnectionpc.org
GUESTBOOK
There was never a time that I saw Caleb - whether for a brief moment, or an extended conversation - that he wasn't kind, witty, engaging, and welcoming. His presence was always one or the best parts of family and friend functions and he will be deeply missed. I love you all very much and I'm holding space for you. -Mike Baker
There are no words for times like this but I'm here for you always. Love, -Aunt Janet Raffauf
Claire, so sorry for your family's loss, hope you'll be comforted by your precious memories.. -Janice & Leo Ronda
Caleb, Where do I even begin. It doesn’t even seem real to writing this right now. You were more than a teammate—you were a true friend and a brother to me. Hearing this news is still difficult to comprehend. I am incredibly grateful for the many times you looked out for me, making sure I always had a ride to and from practice, school, and our games. To many people, it might have seemed like you were my personal chauffeur, but those of us who knew you understood it was much more than that. I will always remember the late-night food runs, the times we spent hanging out at Brayden’s, and all the moments we spent joking around with Isaac, Brady, and Austin during practice. There are so many memories that I will carry with me. I never remember seeing you without a smile on your face, and that warmth made it easy for me—and many others—to come to you and talk about anything. We shared countless personal stories and conversations that meant more than words can express that many would never know about. I am deeply saddened and heartbroken that you are gone so soon. While I may never fully understand why, I know that your memory and spirit will remain with me wherever life takes me. I take comfort in believing that you are now in a better place. I’ll miss you kid. Rest easy, my friend. Sincerely, -Jermone Lofton
Sue & I are heartbroken because of Caleb's passing We have known Rich and Jenn since we moved to Valparaiso in 1991 and knew Nathan and Caleb since they were born. We had a special bond with both Nathan & Caleb. My hope and prayer is that through this unspeakable tragedy that we all surround the Ortiz family and Claire, Caleb's grandmother with love, support and compassion as they grieve. Psalm 34:18: "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit". -Terry & Sue Wolfe
Caleb and I were friends in school and stayed in touch after graduation. He was a caring friend and a lot of fun to be around. I’m really gonna miss him. I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers. -Jayden Villatoro
Rich and Jennifer, You are in our thoughts and our prayers at this time. It is so very hard to lose a loved one especially a child. It’s like losing a part of ourselves. I know that having lost a son of our own, he will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him. I’m sure that he has left influences on many, especially those who loved him. -Dwight and Jody Ames
