Carl Frank Kuss, 89 of Valparaiso, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2026. Carl is survived by his five children, Michael (Hala) Kuss, Maureen Mishevich, Megan (Jeffrey) Owczarzak, Melanie Mallon, and Mia (Jay) Farquis; fourteen grandchildren, Amber (Garrett), Lauren (Kyle), Nicolas (Amanda), Olivia (Rik), John, Christian, Marlo, Madeleine, Paige (Ryan), Chase (Brooke), Michael, Coco, Mae, and Ingrid; and seven great-grandchildren, Charley, Reese, Kane, Julie, Eloise, Amelia, and Mia.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife Linda, parents Steven and Margaret, brothers Steven and Ronald, and grandson Henry.

Carl was born to parents Steven Kuss and Margaret Penciak on May 4, 1936, and grew up in Whiting, alongside his siblings Joan, Paul, Lorraine, John, and Ronald.  After graduating from Clark High School and attending Western Kentucky University, Carl served in the US Army.  Carl married his beloved wife, Linda Jay Biggerstaff, on November 23, 1959, who sadly passed away on November 8, 2019, just shy of their 60th Wedding Anniversary.

A loyal and hard worker, Carl worked as a research technician at Inland Steel for over thirty years before becoming a successful entrepreneur.  Throughout that time, Carl and Linda raised their five children in Griffith, where he dedicated countless hours to coaching his children in baseball and softball, and cheering them on through endless extracurricular activities.  He likewise was the biggest champion of his wife’s and grandchildren's endeavors - from the outfield to the theater, the golf course to the ballroom dance floor, courtside to the recital hall, major life events to everyday moments.  Carl and Linda tirelessly uplifted their family and those around them, were heartily patriotic, and devoted to their Christian faith.

While his family was the most important aspect of his life, Carl’s dedication to his health and fitness was a close second, with Carl lifting weights three days a week, without fail, up until the month preceding his passing.

Even after retiring to Valparaiso, it was simply impossible to contain Carl’s enthusiasm for the activities he loved - whether competing on his son’s croquet course, enjoying a veggie pizza at his favorite restaurant, playing chess, or shouting out advice to the players and coaches of the Blackhawks, da Bears, and of course his most cherished Cubbies.

His unconditional love, rumpus laugh, and limitless encouragement will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 16, 2026, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, directly followed by a Memorial Service at 12:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choosing in Carl’s name.
