Mrs. Carol A. Bertrand, age 72, of Valparaiso, IN, formerly of Rockford, IL, passed away Wednesday, June 19th, 2024, at Community Hospital in Munster, IN after a short illness. She was born the daughter of Matthew “Andy” and Mary Anderson in Montreal, Canada, who precede her in death. Carol loved all things words including reading books and magazines, solving crosswords, or watching her all-time favorite show, Wheel of Fortune. She loved to cook and entertain and was always looking for new recipes to try, leading to a vast collection of cookbooks that her family will enjoy for years to come. In her younger days, she loved to play tennis and golf, or sit by the pool, and enjoy the sun. Carol married Robert on November 1st, 1975, who precedes her in death. Surviving are sons: Matthew and Steven of Valparaiso and Michael of Michigan; as well as brother William of Toronto, ON. Carol loved to travel from ski trips to spring breaks to cruising with Bob. She continued to travel after his passing and was in the process of planning an African Safari. She enjoyed learning about diverse cultures and food and meeting new people along the way. Carol was a Nurse and caretaker her entire life. She attended countless practices and sporting events for her sons. She never complained about the all-day swim meets, the travel baseball schedule, or driving across town so she could watch another kid play. She supported her sons in all their endeavors, providing blunt and candid feedback for which she was known. Carol was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Valparaiso. Upon retiring from nursing, she continued to care for others through her volunteer work. She spent her time at St Agnes Adult Daycare, United Methodist Church Resale Shop, as well as the church itself. Carol loved helping people and always put others’ needs before her own.
A memorial visitation will be held from 9:30 am -11:00 am on Saturday, July 13th, 2024, with the service to follow at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church, 103 N. Franklin Street, Valparaiso, IN. Carol requested in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to your local Humane Society or animal rescue.
