Carolyn R. Scarborough, 90, of Kouts passed away Saturday, February 8, 2025. She was born September 1, 1934, in Hagerstown, MD to Walter G. and Elizabeth “Betty” M. (Cox) Jones. She served the Presbytery of Wabash Valley of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in many regional leadership roles, including 1977 commissioner to General Assembly (the only woman in a delegation of four commissioners), 1989 Vice Moderator, and 1990 Moderator of both Presbytery and the Coordinating Council. She also served on many committees. She was an excellent leader; she ran “a tight ship” as moderator, without being stifling. All remember her as a consummate Presbyterian who took her faith and the denominational expression of faith seriously but was never stuffy and preachy. She was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Kouts and Valparaiso.
On February 19, 1955, she married William E. Scarborough, Jr. She is survived by their children: Sharon Scarborough (Barry Isaacs) of Pennsylvania, Gary (Crystal) Scarborough of Kouts, Ronald Scarborough of Kouts and Steven (Dawn) Scarborough of Valparaiso; grandchildren: David Isaacs, Andrew Scarborough, and Joshua Huffstutler; and great granddaughter, Natalie Huffstutler. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Beverly (Salvatore) Scavone; and granddaughter, Heather Ashley Scarborough.
A memorial visitation and service will be held at a later date at First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso, IN. In honoring Carolyn’s wishes to continue supporting her son whom she lived with, Ron, memorial donations may be made to the family on his behalf.
