Charles Arthur Schau, 92 of West Lafayette, IN, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2024. He was born July 5, 1932, in Valparaiso, IN, to the late Clyde and Pearl (Clouse) Schau. Charles joined the Air Force at age 17, and quickly discovered after one plane jump, that he was destined for land warfare. After joining the Army, Charles served in Korea from 1950-1953 with the 224th Regimental Combat Team, his greatest pride. He later attended Valparaiso University, which opened the door for his career at General Motors. Charles worked as a Senior Manager in insurance and finance, first with the General Motors Corporation, then with The Oak Agency. He was a member of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette, and the VFW. Charles was a hard worker his entire life. He was uncompromising in his beliefs and correctness and lived life on his own terms. He was also friendly and eager to talk about his favorite place on earth, Valparaiso, Indiana. If Valparaiso had a “biggest fan”, it was Charles, and he could find a connection to the Vale of Paradise with anyone he met.
On August 30, 1958, at Holy Family Church in Gary, IN, Charles married the love of his life, Arlene Horwith, who survives, along with their sons: Mark (Barbara) Schau of Holland, MI and Tim (Karen) Schau of Union, ME; grandchildren: Everett Schau, Charles Schau, and DeHavilland Schau; and sister, Judy Schau. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Phyllis Miller, Beverly Fackler, David Schau, Kenneth Schau, Richard Schau, and Ronald Schau. Charles was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will be dearly missed.
A private service will be held for family. Per Charles’ wishes, he will be laid to rest at Angelcrest Cemetery in Valparaiso, Indiana.
