Charles Russell Pumroy, 86 of Kouts, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2023. He was born October 20, 1936, in East Chicago, IN to the late Bernard Neal Pumroy and Vera (Dahl) Pumroy. Russ graduated from Kouts High School in 1954 and served in the United States Army from 1955-1957. Russ proudly made his career as a lifelong farmer in Kouts at Pumroy Farms and sold Gutwein/Specialty seed. He was a dedicated member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served as Head Trustee, assisted in Sunday School, and had an integral part in installing the elevator in the Parish Hall and adding the annex onto the church. Russ also served on the Porter County Drainage Board and delivered Meals on Wheels with his wife, both for over 30 years. He was a gifted handyman and woodworker, who could be described as a perfectionist. His ability to tell stories and jokes was unmatched. Russ will be remembered for his kind heart and generous nature. He will be dearly missed.
On June 29, 1957, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kouts, Russ married Barbara Haman, who survives, along with their children: Scott (JoAnn) Pumroy of Sycamore, IL, Lisa (Doug) DeFries of Kouts, and Dina Mueller of Kouts; brother, Fred (Mary) Pumroy of Fairborn, OH; grandchildren: Krystina (Josh) Bakaturski, Ryan (Kerith Woodyard) Pumroy, Danielle DeFries, Dr. Nicole DeFries, and Russell (Liz Ptacek) Mueller; and great-grandchildren: Lucas, Addyson, and Ellie Jo Bakaturski. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Carlson.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 507 S. Rose Ave., Kouts, with a funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m., Pastor Brian Westgate officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Kouts Memorial Scholarship (Pumroy Family), P.O. Box 699, Kouts, IN 46347.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Uncle Russ. We’re going to miss his great sense of humor, his smile and his willingness to always help out. We can’t make the mid-week visitation and service, but Russ will be foremost in our hearts and minds tomorrow for sure.
