Dawn Lee Garmon, 66 of Valparaiso, IN, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, July 15, 2024. She was born December 22, 1957, in La Mesa, CA to the late Percy and Juanita (Cobourn) Shoemaker. Dawn graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1975, and received her associate degree from Purdue Northwest in Accounting. She made her career as the Assistant Director Controller with Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction for over 23 years. In her free time, Dawn showcased her crafting talents through ceramics, jewelry making, cross stitch, beading, and finger knitting. She also enjoyed reading and solving sudoku puzzles. Dawn was happiest when she was with her family. She loved supporting her grandchildren at their many sports and activities, and decorating for her favorite holiday, Christmas. Dawn will be remembered for her determination and toughness as she fought through adversity. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, who will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.
On January 13, 1976, at the First Nazarene Church in Valparaiso, Dawn married the love of her life, Steven Lee Garmon Sr., who survives, along with their son, Steven (Melissa) Garmon Jr. of Valparaiso; grandchildren, Daphne and Logan Garmon of Valparaiso; sisters, Connie (David) Kniola and Beth (Dusty) Cody, all of Alabama; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved rescue dogs, Suki and Wylie.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Road, Valparaiso. The funeral service will begin on Friday at 12:30 p.m., with additional visitation from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family to assist with medical expenses, or to an animal rescue charity of the donor’s choice.
