Debra Ann Schweller, 56 of Hebron, IN, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2025. She was born February 10, 1969, in Chicago, IL, to the late Harlin and Patricia (McCarthy) Ison Sr. Debbie attended Kouts Middle School and High School before graduating from Merrillville High School. She was a member of Mulberry Tree Ministries in Kouts, and the Kouts American Legion Post 301. Debbie was a jack of all trades throughout her life and had many talents. She was an accomplished cake decorator, which earned her the endearing nickname, “The Cake Lady”, by her children’s friends. Hair Stylist, Bookkeeper, Administrator, and Bartender were also titles Debbie achieved. She was a particularly talented artist through all mediums, which were showcased by her cake designs, oil paintings, and clay sculptures.
In her younger years, Debbie was quite an athlete, participating in volleyball, track and field, swimming, and softball. She continued to enjoy being active through walking and spending time outdoors. Debbie will be remembered for her impressive multitasking skills, vivacious personality, and strength through adversity. Her life can only be described as legendary. Debbie was a loving and devoted mother to her children, who were the light of her life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Debbie is survived by her children: Zachary Schweller of Savannah, GA and Holland Schweller of Battle Creek, MI; life partner, James Hoffman; stepsons: Trevor Hoffman and Justin Hoffman; brothers: Harlin (Sandra) Ison Jr., Raymond (Maria) Ison, and James Ison; nieces and nephews: Joel (McKenna) Ison, Andrew Ison, Samantha (Andy) Follmer, Zoie Ison, Zander Ison, Chase Ison, Michael (Samantha) Schweller, Tabatha Schweller, Ryan Schweller, and Allison (Mason) Taylor.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Kosanke Funeral Home, 309 S. Main Street, Kouts, IN, with a funeral service beginning at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any humanitarian aid relief charity of the donor’s choice.
