Douglas Erwin Mitch, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many passed away on June 3rd, 2024. He was born on February 8th, 1948, in Gary, Indiana, and resided in Valparaiso, Indiana. Doug was the loving husband of the late Mary Ellen (Rusak) Mitch for over five decades until her passing in March of 2021. Together they raised two children: Kristen (Patrick) Stanton, of Downers Grove, Illinois, and Matthew (Misty) Mitch of Portage, Michigan. Doug adored his grandchildren Audrey, Jack, and Charlotte Stanton, and Chloe and Parker Mitch. He is also survived by his brother Duane (Donna) Mitch, special close cousin Toby Tyler, and numerous other friends and family members.

He graduated from Crown Point High School in 1966 before embarking on a career as a Master Carpenter with Central Midwest Carpenters Union Local 1005 - a skill that he proudly passed down to his son Matthew. His dedication to craftsmanship extended beyond work into every aspect of his life. Doug was an active member of the NRA and the Valparaiso Pistol and Rifle Club where he found joy in pursuing one of his passions - hunting. Additionally, he was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Dyer.

His love for family knew no bounds; Doug always prioritized them above all else. From attending basketball games to flag football matches or dance recitals or simply playing cards around the table – there wasn't an event that Doug would miss if it involved spending time with his grandchildren, those he loved most dearly. A Chicago Bears fan at heart who enjoyed traveling throughout North America from the Caribbean up to Alaska! An outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed camping and hunting throughout his life.

For ten years Doug served as a Boy Scout Troop leader which provided him cherished moments shared with Matthew during their scouting adventures together. Furthermore, he dedicated countless hours supporting Kristen's softball team both as scorekeeper and most importantly as her superfan! In addition to these activities, Doug selflessly cared for Mary during her twenty-year battle against Lupus until she lost her fight in 2021. Always known for wearing funny shirts or hats including wigs just so that he could put smiles on his grandkids' faces – this exemplified how much joy meant to him even amidst difficult times. Hardworking yet fun-loving describes Doug perfectly; traits that endeared him deeply not only within his immediate family but among everyone fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him throughout life’s journey.

The family would like to extend special appreciation to nurse Beth from Centrica Hospice of Michigan.  Her kindness and compassion in Douglas’ final days will never be forgotten. The legacy left behind by Doug will forever live on through those whose lives were touched by such an extraordinary man whose kindness knew no bounds. May we find comfort knowing that though physically absent now – memories shared shall remain embedded within our hearts until we meet again someday...

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 8th at Zion United Church of Christ located at 14804 West 113th Ave., Dyer IN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Douglas & Mary Ellen's name towards The Lupus Foundation of America Indiana Chapter based out of Indianapolis IN.

GUESTBOOK

To All of Douglas children, grandchildren and brother Duane. Sending sympathies to all of you. I had not scene Doug since we were at Crown Point High School. We had started school down at MacArthur Elementary School at Cedar Lake, back in the '50s in 1st grade with Mrs Brown. He was as quiet as I was. We went on up to Taft elementary school for 2nd and 3rd grade. By 4th grade I got the German measles and had to take it over the 2nd year. By high school I was in brother Duane class and graduated with him. Doug was great guy and will surely miss hearing from Duane how Doug is. Rest in Peace my old friend. -Irene Doty
