Edmund R. Mech, Sr., 95 of Valparaiso, IN, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2023. He was born November 30, 1928, in Harvey, IL to the late Benedict and Edna (Klotz) Mech. Eddie proudly served as a Medic in the United States Army from 1951-1953, where he was stationed on the frontlines in Korea, and was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery. He made his career as an Industrial Carpenter with Allis-Chalmers in Harvey, IL for 35 years before retirement. Eddie enjoyed collecting coins and stamps, keeping his yard meticulously maintained, and traveling with his wife and family. Eddie will be remembered for his fun personality and gentle disposition. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be deeply missed.
On June 20, 1953, Eddie married the love of his life, Jerry Hartman, who survives, along with their children: Sharon (Tim) Howe, Debbie Howard, Janet (Gary) Bates, Edmund R. “Rick” (Laura) Mech Jr., Scott (Tanya) Mech, and Traci (Rodney) Zippel; grandchildren: Aaron, Abram, Melissa, Gary, Matthew, Gary, Jason, Heather, Abigale, Marissa, Nicholas, Nolan, Noel, and Casey; many great-grandchildren; and sister, Edna McKeebe. He was preceded in death by his brother, Sonny Mech.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at Heartland Christian Center East Cemetery, 15555 S. 900 W., Wanatah, IN.
