Elizabeth “Betty” Lynn Walker Campbell, 82, of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 17, 2025.

Born on August 22, 1943, in Martins Ferry, OH, Betty’s life was defined by a love of learning, passion for world travel, and devotion to family. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Muskingum College and studied at Universität Tübingen, where she developed a lifelong affinity for German language and culture. Later, she earned a Master of Arts in German from Notre Dame as well as  a Master of Arts in Geography from Valparaiso University.

Betty’s career was as varied as it was meaningful. She taught German, history, and computers, nurturing young minds and sharing her love of education. For many years, she taught piano to children and adults and was well-known for the enormous bag of candy she kept in her closet to reward diligent students. Later in life, she returned to her childhood home in Adena to care for her father. There she was elected president of Peoples National Bank in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, where she continued working to serve her community.

Beyond her career success, the center of Betty's life was raising her son and daughters with care and affection.  She is survived by her three children, Scott A. Campbell, Kristin L. Campbell, and Michelle B. Campbell; her two grandchildren, Ayanna E. Campbell-Nimrod and Elizabeth K. Campbell; and her siblings David W. Walker and Janet M. Walker, who will all remember her with gratitude, admiration, and love.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert W. and Marian S. Walker, a sister Frances Ann Walker and brother Robert A. Walker.

Betty leaves a legacy of kindness, intelligence, curiosity, and perseverance. A memorial service will be held in Ohio in June 2026.

GUESTBOOK

Scott. Kristin, and Michelle, remembering your mother with great respect and fondness. Sending you my sincere sympathy in her passing. May you have peace and wonderful memories of your years with her. -Sharon K. Harris

Our deepest sympathies to the Campbell and Walker families, Betty was a sweet, caring and gentle Lady. It was a pleasure to have known and worked for her at the Mount Pleasant Bank. We will never forget her delicious toffee candy. Heaven has just received another beautiful Angel! May she Rest In Peace! -Paul and Joann Babela

I send sincere condolences to the family and friends of Betty Lynn. She was a generous and gifted person, full of grace. Our families (Walker and Hartzell) knew each other well in the 1950s and 1960s, so I remember Betty’s mother and father, too. Her sister, Frances Ann, and I both attended the College of Wooster, Ohio. I have one fond memory of a Thanksgiving vacation from college when a great snowfall occurred. Winds caused great snow drifts along the ridge outside Adena, near my family home. By telephone my father, Lawrence L. Hartzell, and Robert Walker decided to drive as far as they could toward each other. The plan worked. My father drove as far as he could along the ridge, then hoisted my suitcase on his shoulder and walked me toward Mr. walker’s car. He had driven as far as he could toward us in the snow. I was handed over safely to the Walker family. On the next lap, Ann and I were then entrusted to the care of Aunt Peg Walker, who drove us north along plowed roads and deposited us safely at the College of Wooster. I honor our families and especially our fathers, who supported their daughters’ educational efforts. As it turned out, Ann and I both earned Ph.Ds., and had successful careers as researchers and professors. Betty Lynn’s siblings all earned advanced degrees and distinguished themselves in their respective careers. I credit our shared Presbyterian faith and small town values that carried us through. Betty Lynn and I had our last luncheon meeting together when she returned to Adena to care for her father. She was also elected President of the local bank system, a vote of confidence in her many abilities. May her memory be a blessing to all who remember her. -Marlyn (Hartzell) Klee

Dear Scott, Kristin, and Michelle, I am saddened to hear of your mom's passing. During my four years of serving First Presbyterian - Valpo, your mom was such a source of grace and kindness. I will not forget her, and I keep you three in my heart. Blessings, -Gerald Stephens
