Fred W. Oar, 86 of Valparaiso, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.  He was born March 3, 1938 in South Chicago, IL to Albert W. and Virginia C. (Hansen) Hoar.  A Veteran of the U.S. Navy, Fred made his career as a 1st class sheet metal man at General Mills in South Chicago.  He was an avid reader, enjoyed watching movies, and almost always had a cup of coffee in his hand.  A kind, generous, and loving man, he was known for his good sense of humor and for his kindness to children, especially the neighbor kids who would give him a helping hand.  Fred will be remembered by his family and friends as a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather.
On November 25, 1963, Fred married Brenda M. Long who survives along with their daughter, Irenia (Joe) Rimsky; and grandson, Walter Rimsky.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gayle Zarrifs.
A Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2024 from 2:00-4:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, with a Funeral Service beginning at 4:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
