Gilbert Franklin “Gibs” “Gil” Layman, 80 of Merrillville, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 12, 2024. He was born May 31, 1944, in Los Angeles, CA, to Robert and Mary Louise (Leitzel) Layman. Gil worked for US Steel Sheet & Tin for 41 years as a Metallurgist. He was instrumental in purchasing and construction of the Merrillville Little League Complex and served as Vice President on the Board of Directors. Gil volunteered for many years as a coach for Merrillville Little League & youth boys basketball programs. He loved going to Chetek Wisconsin in the summer to catch fish and drink beer with his Straw Hat Bandit buddies. He also enjoyed golfing. Gil was an extremely talented woodworker who loved working in his sanctuary/garage on projects for his family and friends.
Gil is survived by his sons: Jay (Dawn) Layman of Scottsdale, AZ, and Jeff (Chris) Layman of Valparaiso, IN; grandchildren: Nathan (Morgan), Karlyn, Nick, Gavin, and Carter. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bob, and his loving wife of 49 years, Sandra (nee Guernsey) Layman.
Following cremation, private family services will be held.
