Gladys E. Huhnke, 92, of Valparaiso, formerly of Hanna & North Manchester passed away Thursday, November 24, 2022. She was born March 5, 1930 in Hanna, In to Claude & Grace (Cumerford) Lute and graduated from Union Mills High School in 1948. Gladys began her career as a clerk with the Valparaiso Post Office for 15 years before moving to North Manchester and becoming a teller at Indiana Lawrence Bank. She had been a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Wanatah. Tending her flowers and yard in even the hottest weather were important to her. She could be found reading contentedly or watching baseball, especially the Cubs, during her free time. During times of extreme excitement she might be heard exclaiming “Shoot the cats”, or “Holy socks”.
On January 31, 1953 she married Alfred G. Huhnke who preceded her in death in 2001. Survivors include their children; Glenn (Robin) Huhnke of Hanna, Arlene (Max) Robbins of Brownsburg, sister, Estella (Donald) Rosenbaum of Wanatah, 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one son, Michael Huhnke in 2010, her siblings: Violet, Marian, Sherman & Walter and a great-granddaughter.
A visitation will be held Tuesday from 12 noon – 2 pm at Wanatah Funeral Chapel with funeral service beginning at 2:00 pm and burial to follow at Hanna Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the VNA Hospice.
